Background of the study
Consonant cluster simplification is a phonological process in which complex clusters of consonants are reduced to simpler forms. In Nigerian English, particularly as spoken in Abuja, this phenomenon is common and reflects the influence of speakers’ native languages on their English pronunciation (Oluwaseun, 2023). Simplification may occur for articulatory ease, leading to variations in speech that deviate from standard English norms. Such phonetic adjustments can affect intelligibility and may be perceived as markers of informal speech. Advances in acoustic analysis have allowed researchers to document these simplifications, yet systematic studies in the Abuja context remain limited (Adebayo, 2024). This study appraises the extent of consonant cluster simplification in Nigerian English in Abuja, using acoustic measurements and perceptual tests to document patterns and assess their implications for language teaching, speech recognition, and communication clarity (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite its prevalence, consonant cluster simplification in Nigerian English is under-researched, especially in urban centers like Abuja. This simplification can lead to deviations from standard pronunciation, affecting communication clarity and academic performance (Ibrahim, 2023). The lack of comprehensive data on how consonant clusters are simplified hinders the development of effective language training programs and speech technologies. This study seeks to systematically evaluate the patterns and acoustic characteristics of consonant cluster simplification in Nigerian English, providing insights that can inform language teaching and improve speech recognition systems.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To document the patterns of consonant cluster simplification in Nigerian English.
  2. To analyze the acoustic characteristics of simplified clusters.
  3. To evaluate the implications for language teaching and speech technology.

Research questions:

  1. What are the common patterns of consonant cluster simplification in Abuja?
  2. How do the acoustic properties of simplified clusters differ from standard forms?
  3. What impact does simplification have on communication clarity?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Consonant cluster simplification is prevalent among Nigerian English speakers in Abuja.
  2. Simplified clusters exhibit distinct acoustic properties compared to standard clusters.
  3. Targeted pronunciation training can mitigate the negative effects of simplification.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it appraises consonant cluster simplification in Nigerian English, offering insights into phonological adaptations in language contact situations. The findings will assist educators and technologists in developing improved language teaching methods and speech recognition systems that account for natural speech variations (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating consonant cluster simplification in Nigerian English in Abuja, focusing on acoustic and perceptual analyses.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Consonant Cluster Simplification: The reduction of complex consonant sequences into simpler forms.
  2. Nigerian English: The variety of English spoken in Nigeria.
  3. Acoustic Analysis: The study of sound properties through measurement techniques.
